This is a vintage hand-carved Makonde Lipiko mask, created in the 1990s in Southern Tanzania and Northeast Mozambique. In the Makonde language, Lipiko means helmet mask.
These masks are the most important carvings used in Makonde initiation ceremonies, traditionally worn tilted back over the head so the dancer could look out through the mouth. Lipiko masks represent either ancestral spirits or animals, symbolizing the ancestors’ joy at the successful passage into adulthood.
Carved from the wild kapok tree (locally known as ntene), this mask comes on a stand for easy display. A striking cultural artifact, it makes a powerful statement for collectors of African art, tribal masks, or cultural heritage decor.
Our curated collection of tribal wood carvings offers a glimpse into enduring traditions and artistry. Historically, masks were often used in ceremonial dances and stored in village homes, where they were subject to environmental and handling damage. Heritage pieces bear natural age and wear, which only adds to its authenticity and character and may show cracks or chips, consistent with their age. We carefully document any notable imperfections and strive to depict them accurately in our photographs.
Perfect for art collectors, interior designers, or anyone seeking bold cultural statement decor, this original tribal mask brings depth, history, and heritage into any space.
